Tao of Now

Let me first address why I created this blog: I do not know, lol. In all honesty, I have a livejournal, so having an additional blog seems like overkill. Though where my lj is a place for me to express my feelings, I still feel limited in what I can express rant-wise without offending others, namely my friends. So I suppose this blog grants some amount of, however minuscule, anonymity.

Recently, after much peer pressure and a genuine curiosity, I became a member of stickam. I wanted to see what I all the fuss was about. Granted, most of this "fuss" stemmed from myspace members, so that in itself should have been warning enough. Stickam is a live community, i.e. users communicate with each other live via webcam. It is horrible. My patience with the "scene" had already been worn very thin, but after an hour of checking stickam out, that patience has been tossed by the wayside. Even at 12 & 1am, girls can be seen with thick makeup. User profiles superficially read how if you do not meet their definition of hot, you will be banned. The videos created by these aforementioned users contain meaningless banter, oftentimes concerning newly flat ironed bangs or how they are better than so & so. In case this is not sad enough, these users draw thousands of viewers, most whom appear to be quite loyal. It appalls me that this scene used to play a fairly large role in my life. Granted, I did not fully immerse myself into it, and never did I trade in my personality to become yet another clone, but still, it is a bit disconcerting.

This is like a growing epidemic. It is as if no one has their own identities anymore. My generation (moreso in the scene) is one where inane numbers of individuals strive for quick celebrity status, whatever the means. Ours is a culture where Jeffree Star and Tila Tequila are idols to aspire to be and increasingly degenerative "reality" television is the thing to watch. Ours is a time where one is quick to claim uniqueness and individuality, when their physical appearance has been intentionally altered to mimic the look of thousands of other people. Ours is a time where [falsely] claiming an orientation that is not heterosexual is "in". It is maddening how misguided and utterly idiotic my generation, at least as a whole, has gotten. Somewhere in the chaotic sea that is adolescence, many of my peers, in their quest to find themselves, have fallen into the abyss that is mediocrity.
